Pink eye is an eye problem that makes your eye feel irritable and itching. This is also called conjunctivitis and is caused due to various reasons including allergies, bacteria and virus. The condition becomes worse with the pollen, dust mites, make-up, smoke, pollution and eye drops. It shows the symptoms like redness in the eyes, tearing, itching and burning sensation. If the pinkeye is due to a virus, initially it affects a single eye and later it spreads to another eye, it affects both the eyes in the case of bacterial infection. Here are some home made remedies to treat pink eye in a simple way.

Pinkeye is also known as conjunctivitis that has redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, the mucus membrane that lines the eyelid and eye surface. The lining of the eye is usually clear and if irritation or infection occurs, then the lining becomes red and swollen.

Causes

Pinkeye is very common and is not serious that goes away in 7 – 10 days without any medical treatment. The most common caused of pinkeye are as follows.

  • Dry eyes from lack of tears this is due to exposure to wind and sun
  • Allergies
  • Infections caused by virus or bacteria
  • Chemicals, smoke, fumes

Both viral and bacterial pinkeye are contagious and can spread very easily. It can due to poor hand washing, sharing objects like towel, washcloth, and better to prevent it. Viral pinkeye caused by an adenovirus, which is a common respiratory virus that cause a sore throat or upper respiratory infection.

Symptoms

  • Swelling of the eyelids
  • Swollen and tender areas in front of the ears
  • Clear or slightly thick, whitish drainage
  • Redness in the white of the eye
  • Itching and burning sensation of the eyelids
  • A lot of tearing

Homemade remedies to treat pink eye

Cold or warm compress

To treat the swelling and redness caused by pink eye use cold or warm compress. Take a clean cotton cloth and dip it in the cold or warm water. Squeeze the excess water and retain the cloth on your closed eyes. Repeat doing this process for three to four times in a day. This remedy helps to prevent the discharge from the eyes. Use separate cloths to both of your eyes.

Black tea

Black tea on the pink eye is a good home remedy to try it out. It reduces itchiness and inflammation with its tannins and it also aids to fight with the viral infections through their bioflavonoids.

Take two black tea bags and keep them in the fridge for a few minutes. Take them out and keep it on your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes. Follow this remedy for 3-4 times a day. One can also try using chamomile tea or green tea bags also.

Saline solution

The saline solution is indeed one best solution to treat pink eyes in the home. It works like a natural disinfectant and cures the problem fast. Take a cup of distilled water and add it half to one tablespoon of salt. Now boil this mixture for a few minutes and allow it cool. Take some amount and use it as an eye wash with the help of a dropper. Repeatedly doing the remedy for many times a day for best results.

Boric acid

Boric acid is one fantastic way to treat any eye problem. It reduces itchiness, redness, inflammation and burning sensation with its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Boil one cup of water and add it one tablespoon of boric acid to it. Now, apply this solution on your eyes with cotton balls, or else use it as an eye wash with an eye dropper, and then rinse off with lukewarm water. Pat it with a smooth cloth. Repeat this remedy for two to three times a day.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera with its antibiotic and astringent properties helps to cure the pink eye and its associated symptoms. Collect the gel from aloe vera tentacle and pour it in to the fresh water, beat it to mix both of them well. Pour this solution in your eyes with a dropper to wash your eyes. Try doing this remedy for three to four times a day.

Honey

Honey is the best home remedy for pink eye. Honey has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is particularly due to high levels of the compound dihydroxyacetone. Take ¼ teaspoon of raw honey, ¼ cup of pure water, and pinch of salt. Mix raw honey and salt in pure water and dissolve them completely. Make sure that water is not too hot as it may destroy the beneficial properties of water. Place a 1 – 2 drops in each eye by using a clean dropper for every few hours as needed.

Milk and honey

Milk and honey helps to soothe and treat conjunctivitis. Honey has amazing anti-bacterial properties. Use equal parts of honey and milk and make sure the milk is warm. Mix them well and keep stirring until the honey becomes smooth in the milk. Take 2 – 3 drops using an eyedropper and drop into your eyes several times. Use this mixture as a compress and it start working immediately and within 24 hours your pinkeye clears.
