Scabies cause, symptoms and Home Remedies Treatment At Home

Are you suffering from red rashes all over your skin? Are these rashes intensely painful and itchy? Well, if these are the symptoms, then you might be suffering from scabies. It is a skin disease, which is highly contagious. Scabies is caused by a mite, namely, Sarcoptes Scabiei, which can survive for a month or longer on the human skin. These mites may spread through the close contact or sharing the personal items of the infected person. The most common symptoms of the scabies are – red rashes, blisters, itching, swelling, and pain. These rashes generally appear under the breasts, armpits, on the shoulder blades, buttocks, between the fingers, soles of the feet, around the waist, genital area, and near the elbow. You can opt for over-the-counter drugs for the treatment of scabies.However,there are several home remedies for scabies, which are natural and have no side effects.

HOME REMEDIES FOR SCABIES

1. Cayenne Pepper

If you are wondering how to get rid of scabies,then cayenne pepper is one of the best home remedies for it. Pour one cup of cayenne pepper in the hot bath water. Soak in it until the water cools down. Rinse off the pepper with cool water. Do it once daily to kill the mites.

Note: Make sure that you don’t get the water in your eyes as pepper can cause the burning sensation.
This remedy is not meant for the people having sensitive skin.

2. Turmeric

Turmeric is a wonderful home treatment for scabies. Make a thick paste by mixing a tbsp of powdered turmeric and a few drops of lemon juice. Apply this paste on the affected areas of the skin and leave it for one hour. Rinse it off with the lukewarm water. Repeat it daily to see the improvement.

3. White Vinegar

White vinegar has acidic properties which change the pH level of the skin. It causes mites to die. Mix equal quantities of water and white vinegar. Apply this solution on the affected areas using a cotton ball. Later, rinse off with warm water. Repeat it 3 times a day, for 10-15 minutes. It is one of the most useful remedies for scabies.

4. Bleach

Bleach helps kill mites. Mix one part of bleach with four parts of water. Spray this solution on the affected skin twice every day, for a few days.

5. Garlic

The antibacterial properties of garlic help ward off the scabies-causing mites. Just apply garlic extract on the affected areas. In addition, consume 3-4 cloves of garlic daily.

Note: In order to prevent the burning sensation, give a break of two days after applying the extract regularly for 3 days.

6. Clove Oil

Clove oil is anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial in nature. It can give you instant relief from the itching and pain associated with scabies. But, it may cause burning sensation on the skin. Hence, before applying, dilute it with a little olive oil.

7. Onion

The presence of quercetin in the onion helps soothe the affected area. In addition, the sulfur compounds of onion help prevent the infection. Grate a medium-sized onion and apply its juice on the affected skin. Use it frequently to get the best results.

8. Borax and Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is an antibacterial while borax is a natural insecticide and fungicide. When they are combined, they kill the scabies mite and reduce the chances of secondary infection in the affected area. Mix two cups of borax and one cup of hydrogen peroxide in the bathtub (filled with lukewarm water). Soak yourself in this water for 15 minutes. Take this bath at least once a day.

9. Bitter Gourd

It is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory in nature, therefore, effective in curing scabies. Blend a bitter gourd and strain it to take out the juice. You may also add a tablespoon of lemon juice to reduce its bitter taste. Drinking it once a day can help cure scabiesin a week.

10. Petroleum Jelly

Mix one tablespoon of sulfur and nine tablespoons of petroleum jelly. Apply it to the affected skin. While jelly will soothe the skin, sulfur will heal the infection.

11. Cold Compress

Dab an ice cube (wrapped in a washcloth) on the infected skin as a cold compress. It will give you temporary relief from the itching and pain. Or else, soak a clean towel in the chilled water and place it on the affected area.

HERBAL REMEDIES TO TREAT SCABIES

12. Calendula Petals


Grind a few petals of calendula. Add two tablespoons of aloe vera gel and a pinch of turmeric powder to it. Now apply this paste on the affected parts of the skin. Let it dry and wash it off later. Repeat it twice daily until you recover completely.

13. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is loaded with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, antifungal, antiseptic, disinfectant and wound healing properties. Hence, using tea tree oil for scabies treatment proves very effective. It has terpinen-4-ol, which kills the parasite that causes scabies. Mix one tablespoon each of olive oil and tea tree oil. Dab it on the skin using a cotton ball. Do this twice a day, for 2-3 weeks.

In addition, add 10-12 drops of tea tree oil to your bathtub filled with lukewarm water.
Note It is not suggested for the pregnant women and nursing mother.
People having sensitive skin should first test it on a small area of the skin as it can be irritable for them.

14. Indian Lilac

Indian lilac is the best for numerous skin disorders. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties which help treat scabies. Dab pure Indian lilac oil on the affected skin and massage gently so that the oil penetrates into the skin. Leave it for a few minutes and then, take a bath. Do this once every day for a few weeks, to prevent the virus from spreading.

Or else, mix equal amounts of Indian lilac oil and turmeric powder. Apply this paste on the affected areas, 2-3 times daily. It can help soothe the itching.
Alternatively, crush some fresh leaves to make a paste. Wash the affected skin and then apply this paste to it. Let it dry. Finally, rinse it off with the water.
Moreover, boil some of its leaves in a cup of water and allow it to cool. Drink one tablespoon of it, 3-4 times a day. Repeat it for one or two weeks until the scabies is completely cured.

15. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is packed with antimicrobial properties and serves as a natural treatment for scabies.Apply freshly extracted aloe vera gel on the affected areas. Leave it for half an hour. Then, rinse it off with the lukewarm water. Repeat it 2-3 times daily, for a few weeks.

16. Lavender Oil

It kills the mites and encourages the regeneration of the skin cells. Pour five drops of pure lavender oil in the warm bath water. Soak yourself in it for 15 minutes. Repeat it once every day, for a few weeks. It will soothe the skin and reduce the pain.

Or else, mix equal amounts of rubbing alcohol and lavender oil. Apply the mixture on the affected area. Massage it tenderly so that it penetrates deep into the skin. It helps kill the mites and their eggs. Perform it twice a day, to speed up the healing process.

17. Rosemary

Rosemary has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Hence, it helps protect the affected skin from the secondary infection, reduces the pain and gives relief from the itching.  Place rosemary leaves in a cup and pour some boiled water on them. Let it cool for some time. Soak a cotton ball in the water and apply it to the affected areas. Do it thrice a day.

18. Bush Tea

Bush tea also has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Boil some water and add bush tea leaves to it. Add honey to sweeten the taste. Drink it three times a day.

19. Mint


Mint contains menthol, which helps soothe the itching and inflammation. Prepare a paste by crushing and adding some water to the mint leaves. Apply it on your skin for the cooling effect.

20. Cat’s Claw

Due to its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, cat’s claw effectively cures the skin infections. You can make tea from the inner bark, leaves, or roots of this herb. The extract of cat’s claw herb is also available in the market, in the form of capsules.

Note: It should not be taken internally during pregnancy.

21. St. John’s Wort and Evening Primrose

Pour a few drops of evening primrose oil to a tincture of St. John’s Wort. Apply it on the affected areas of the skin. It will give you relief from the itching and irritation.

22. Tamanu Oil

It has antibacterial and insect-repellent properties. Thus, it kills the mites that cause scabies. It also reduces inflammation and redness of the rashes. You can apply it directly on your skin.

DO’S

  • Keep your surroundings clean to prevent mite infestation.
  • Wash all the clothes and bed sheets you have used in the last three days with hot water.
  • Stay away from any physical activity. Take complete rest.
  • Apply zinc and turmeric paste on the affected area to prevent the fungal outbreak.


DON’TS

  • Don’t share any of your personal items with anyone to protect them from infection.
  • Don’t scratch rashes as it will worsen the condition.
  • Avoid any personal contact like shaking hands, hugging, etc.
  • Don’t visit the crowded places.
  • Avoid physical contact with your partner.
