Hiccups Relief Treatment by Natural Remedies

Hiccups, also known as SDF (Synchronous Diaphragmatic Flutter) or singultus in medical terms, are the non-voluntary contractions of the diaphragm. Hiccups may be very irritating, and there is no specific reason for their occurrence. There are many conditions that can lead to hiccups like gas in stomach, acid reflux or heartburn, too much food intake, stretching of the tummy after drinking or having meals, or eating too rapidly.

1. Drink Water

While hiccuping, the vagus nerves are either damaged or stop functioning well. So, to properly stimulate them, the best remedy is to drink water with the help of a straw. Plug both of your ears with your hands while drinking water.

2. Pulling the Tongue Out

Pulling the tongue out is one remedy that always works for curing hiccups. Pull your tongue out for 5 seconds and hold it with your fingers. The hiccups will go after some time.

3. Massage

Massage the back of your mouth’s roof with the help of a cotton swab. It will prevent diaphragm spasms and trigger the vagus nerve; thus, alleviating the hiccups.

4. Hold the Breath

Breathe in deeply and hold for about 10 seconds. Then slowly let it out. This remedy will help get rid of hiccups in some time. Repeat the process for about 4-5 times.

5. Breathe with Closed Ears

Close your ears with fingers and inhale and exhale slowly. First inhale, and then put your tongue out so as to exhale as much as you can. Repeat the process in some time gaps if the problem persists.

6. Peanut Butter

Take a spoonful of peanut butter and keep it in your mouth for 5-10 minutes. Afterwards, swallow the peanut butter without chewing it. This remedy will cure the hiccup.

7. Sugar

Take a spoonful of sugar and hold it in the mouth for 5-10 minutes. Then gulp it down without chewing it. Take a sip of water afterwards.

8. Yogurt

Take yogurt (1 cup) and add salt (1 teaspoon) to it. Stir well. Eat it slowly. This is one of the effective remedies to cure hiccups.

9. Lemon

Cut a slice of lemon, and sucks the juice out of it. This is one of the best remedies to stop the hiccups.

10. Burp

It is a weird remedy, but helps battle with the hiccups. Inhale so much of air through mouth that the burp comes out automatically and vagus nerve gets reset.

11. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar might turn out to be an instant remedy for hiccups. All you have to do is drink a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar as soon as hiccups begin.

12. Hot Sauce

The burning sensation of the sauce will shift your body’s focus towards the burn instead of hiccups. Though it might turn out to be bad for your taste buds, but will definitely stop your hiccups.

13. Tickling

Ask your friend to tickle you. It is another good idea of stopping the hiccups. The tickling feel will make your mind distracted from the thoughts of hiccups.

14. Paper Bags

One good method of increasing the sensitivity of the vagus nerve is breathing into a paper bag. Hold the open end of the brown paper bag around your mouth. Then, seal it. Breathe into it to get rid of hiccups.

15. Paper Towels

Take a glass of water and put a single layer of paper towel on it. Suck the water through the towel. It will put pressure on the diaphragm, relieving hiccups.

16. Mustard Seeds

Mix ½ teaspoon each of clarified butter and mustard seeds. Swallow this mixture to get relief.

17. Castor Oil

Mix 1 teaspoon each of castor oil and honey. Lick the mixture with the help of your fingers.

18. Gargle with Chilled and Warm Water Alternatively

Gargling with warm and chilled water increases the level of carbon dioxide in the blood, which, in turn, makes changes in the diaphragm to treat hiccups.

You can also halt the hiccups by sipping ice cold water.

19. Ginger

A piece of ginger can surely cure hiccups. Peel a small piece of ginger and chew it. The strong taste of ginger will distract the diaphragm and cure the hiccups.

20. Chocolate

Well, this one is yummy! Sip powdered chocolate drink with the help of a spoon.

21. Cardamom

Add a few pods of cardamom to the boiling water and drink it slowly.

Alternatively, you can crush two cardamoms. Add the powder to 1 cup of boiling water. Add mint leaves (4-5) to it. After 5 minutes, strain the infusion and drink it for the best results.

22. Honey

Stir honey (1 teaspoon) in warm water. Put it on the back of your tongue. Swallow it. This remedy will stop the hiccups by tickling the vagus nerves.
