Gastroparesis Treatment, Cause And Remedies

Delayed gastric emptying or Gastroparesis is a condition in which the food remains in the stomach for an extended time and causes stomach problems. It is a chronic disease, which results when the nerve muscles and the intestines do not work properly. The symptoms of gastroparesis include- vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, gas, heartburn, etc.
The factors that lead to this ailment are – systemic sclerosis, stomach surgeries, viral infection, ulcer and tumors in the stomach, problems with adrenal glands, intake of medications (narcotics, nicotine, calcitonin, antacids, etc). There are several medications available in the market to treat gastroparesis, but they may cause side-effects. You can try the below given home remedies to get quick relief.

HOME REMEDIES TO TREAT GASTROPARESIS

There are many ingredients in your kitchen you can use to cure gastroparesis. Here is a list of some of them:

1. Carom Seeds

‘Carom seeds’ is an effective diabetic gastroparesis treatment, as it helps in improving the bowel movement. It is rich in thymol, which assists the release of gastric juices and has lots of stomach cleansing properties.

You can consume 1 tbsp of roasted carom seeds mixed with salt, and swallow it with a glass of water.
Another method is to boil 1-2 tbsp of the seeds in a cup of water. When the mixture gets reduced to half, strain it. Drink this water once a day.

2. Asafoetida

Asafoetida is a wonderful natural remedy for digestive disorders. It also helps expel the gas in the stomach. For treating gastroparesis, take 1/4th tbsp of asafoetida powder and add it to a cup of lukewarm water. Stir it thoroughly and drink it twice a day, regularly.

Note: Taking raw asafoetida orally may be harmful to the breastfeeders, as well as infants.

3. Fenugreek

Fenugreek reduces the pain caused by this disease and makes the digestion process easier. The beneficial content of the seeds gets mixed with the food and makes its movement smooth. Just swallow 1 tbsp of fenugreek seeds with a glass of water everyday (preferably morning). Do this once a day for effective results.

4. Ginger

Ginger is used to treat gastric problems like nausea, stomach pain, etc since ages. It also escalates the process of emptying the stomach. You can drink ginger tea by mixing 1 tbsp of grated ginger to a cup of boiled water. Heat it for a couple of minutes and drink it twice a day, regularly.

5. Pineapple

Pineapple is one of the most renowned natural remedies for gastroparesis. It is rich in bromelain and papain, which helps ease the digestion process. You can consume fresh pineapple juice every day to get effectual results.

6. Celery

Another easily available ingredient that helps treat the gastrointestinal problem is celery. It helps clean the impurities from the digestive tract and speeds up the process of digestion. Take 2 tbsp of celery seeds and add it to a glass of water. Put the mixture on flame and heat it for a couple of minutes. Turn off the heat and strain the mixture. Drink the resultant solution daily after the meals.

7. Turmeric

The main ingredient in turmeric is “curcumin”, which has numerous anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties. You can include turmeric to your daily diet in several forms:

You can prepare a decoction by brewing 1/2 tbsp of turmeric powder in a glass of hot water. Add salt to it (optional).
Alternatively, add turmeric to your hot milk. For this, heat a cup of milk and add 1/4–1/2 tbsp of turmeric to it. Add honey according to your taste and heat it for another couple of minutes. Strain and then drink it.

8. Yogurt

Yogurt is one of the best natural ingredients to treat stomach-related problems. It has beneficial microorganisms that help treat gastric problems and harmful bacteria, such as, H. pylori. It is rich in calcium, vitamin B-2, B-12, potassium and magnesium. Low-fat or unsweetened yogurt is recommended to fix gastroparesis. You can consume 2-3 bowls of this yogurt daily for effective results.

Note: Overuse of yogurt can cause kidney stones, weakens the bones and increases the risk of ovarian cancer.

9. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has alkalizing properties, which makes it the best natural remedy for gastroparesis. You can consume 1 tbsp of it with a cup of warm water. Consume it 20-25 minutes before the meals to make your digestive tract work better.

Note: You should consult your doctor before its intake if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or diabetic.

10. Apple

This fruit is full of enzymes, which are required to break down the food while digestion. Eat two apples daily to get rid of gastroparesis. Make sure to have it without the peel.

11. Papaya

Papaya is known as the ‘fruit of the angels’ for its natural properties. It is rich in bromelain and papain, which helps in the protein breakdown process to digest the food properly. Eat this fruit 30 minutes before the meals.

Tip: You can also consume papaya enzyme tablets after consulting a doctor.

14. Exercises

Exercises are the natural way to increase your heart rate and breathing, which in turn, stimulates the contractions of the digestive system. These contractions help in the digestive process and prevents the gastrointestinal symptoms. There are several exercises and yoga postures that are beneficial for the gastrointestinal problems. You can do some of them in your daily routine to overcome the disease, such as belly roll, walking, stomach strengthening pilates, etc.

Practice deep breathing as it stimulates the vagus nerve, increases the blood flow to the digestive tract and improves the bowel movement. For treating digestive problems, sit on a chair in a comfortable position (placing your hands on your abdomen) and inhale through your nose. Hold your breath for 4-5 seconds, and exhale through your mouth (exhalation should last longer than the inhalation). Repeat this process for 5- 10 minutes everyday.
Note: Avoid the participation in high-impact exercises and don’t start your exercise just after having a meal, as both can make the symptoms worse.

15. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is very essential for the people suffering from gastroparesis and other digestive problems. You can include food rich in vitamin D, such as fortified milk, fish, egg yolks, cheese, etc., in your diet or step out in the sun every morning for 15- 20 minutes to get some natural vitamin D.

16. Increase the Intake of Low-Fiber Foods

Fibers are generally harder to digest. Therefore, if you are suffering from digestive problems, like gastroparesis, then increase the consumption of low-fiber foods, such as fish, milk, white rice, plain white pasta, tofu, tender meat, etc. This will surely treat the problem.

17. Increase the Fluid Intake

If you are suffering from gastroparesis, you should increase the consumption of liquids in your diet, as they are easy to digest. Liquids prevent dehydration and supply salts and minerals to the body. 18. Chewing Gum

To make fresh aloe juice at home, scoop out 2 tbsp of aloe vera gel from its leaf and add 1 cup of water or any other juice. Mix them in a blender or mixer, and drink it.

Note: Don’t store the liquid for a longer time; otherwise, its medicinal properties will get diminished.

20. Chamomile Tea


Chamomile tea helps soothe the lining of the stomach and is effective in treating gastroparesis. Drink a cup or two of this tea daily. Remember to prepare the tea in hot water, but not the boiling one, as that would evaporate the necessary ingredients of the tea.

Note: If you have been prescribed anti-coagulant medication, then avoid drinking it.

21. Psyllium Husk


It is one of the oldest remedies to cure all kind of digestive problems. It helps push the food out from the body. You can consume two tbsp of this powder with a glass of milk or warm water, twice (one in the morning and one in the evening) daily.

22. Lavender


Lavender is used to treat digestion-related problems and reduces the pain caused by gastroparesis. It can be used in several ways:

Apply lavender oil on your stomach, as it has a calming and cooling effect.
Or else, take some lavender flowers to prepare a herbal tea. Consume it daily.

23. Peppermint

Peppermint is rich in menthol and menthone. These two components are essential for relaxing the stomach. They also increase the production of bile juice that aids in proper digestion.

For the tea, you need to brew 2 tbsp of peppermint leaves in 2 cups of water for 5-10 minutes. Allow it to cool and drink it.
Peppermint oil can be applied to the stomach as well, as it helps combat irritation, gas and indigestion.
Note: If you have diabetes, you should first consult your doctor before trying this remedy.

24. Melissa

Melissa, which is also known as lemon balm, is a calming herb. It belongs to the mint family and helps improve the appetite and digestion. It also reduces stress and discomfort due to indigestion. For preparing this tea, steep ½ tbsp of dried lemon balm in hot water. Drink this tea 3-4 times a day.

25. Magnolia

This herb has numerous medicinal and digestive properties, and is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory in nature. Magnolia bark extract is used for gastroparesis, as it balances the overproduction of nitric oxide, which is one of the key causes for the disease. The dosage of this bark must be between 3-9 gms for decoction. It can also be mixed with ginger for effective results.

Note: High dosage may lead to harmful effects, as the toxicity level is quite high in it. Consult a health practitioner for further reference.

26. Skullcap Root

This herb belongs to the mint family and has lots of antioxidant properties, which helps treat various gastrointestinal problems. The extract of this root helps in boosting the healing process.

Note: Do not consume it if you are a diabetic.

27. Catnip Tea

This tea is rich in a component, called “nepetalactone”. It possesses antifungal and antibacterial properties, which are responsible for its curative and purifying properties, and makes it a natural treatment for gastroparesis.

Note: Over-consumption of this tea may be unsafe.

28. Swedish Bitter

This herbal concoction is useful to treat diabetes (type 1 and type 2 diabetes), and to boost the process of stomach emptying. You can have one tablespoon of it before each meal to get relief from gastroparesis.

Note: Avoid its consumption, if you are experiencing nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain.

DIET PLAN FOR GASTROPARESIS

Maintaining a proper diet routine would keep your digestive tract relaxed and would reduce the symptoms of gastroparesis. You can follow a diet plan as mentioned below:


  • For breakfast, consume skimmed milk and have a piece of toast or white bread with it.
  • For mid-morning, you can have a low-fat yogurt.
  • For lunch, take a diet with low-fat content.
  • For evening, consume some fruits. You can also have ginger tea.
  • For dinner, consume some mashed potatoes, low-fat pudding, yogurt, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.

DO’S

  • Eat in chunks, and chew the food properly.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat pureed, well-cooked and fermented food.
  • Go for a walk after eating.
  • Do meditation and chanting.

DON’TS

  • Avoid foods rich in gluten, dairy products, hot and spicy food, high-fat food, such as cheese, bacon, etc.
  • Avoid carbonated beverages.
  • Quit smoking and drinking.
  • Don’t lie down immediately after a meal.
