Ayurvedic Natural Remedies for Tonsillitis ( cause, symptoms & treatment )

Tonsillitis........ do you think that those two little clumps of lymphatic tissue, which can cause so much discomfort especially in small children, should live or die?

Good question.

And one we will try and make easier for you to answer by explaining what tonsillitis is and how it affects you.

And then we will journey on by giving you some really simple and useful home remedies, which are easy, and for the most part are ingredients you can find in your grocery cupboard at home.

So what is Tonsillitis and what do the Tonsils actually do?

  • Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the palatine tonsils.
  • Tonsils are the accumulation of lymphatic tissue on both sides of the throat.
  • Tonsillitis can be caused by either a viral or bacterial infection.
  • The tonsils are there to protect the throat from incoming invading germs.
  • When the germs become too much for them to handle, the tonsils themselves become infected and inflamed and there you have it, a dose of tonsillitis.

Symptoms of Tonsillitis

  • sore throat
  • difficulty in swallowing
  • headache
  • earache,
  • fever
  • nausea and vomiting
  • enlarged lymph nodes

Try this simple Home Remedy using Vinegar and Garlic.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups water
  • 2 cups vinegar (see uses for vinegar)
  • 3/4 cup of slightly crushed garlic
  • 2 large tablespoons sugar

Method

  • Boil together until you have 3 cups of liquid left, remove from stove and add 2 tablespoons honey
  • For small children administer 1/2 teaspoon 4 times a day

Warning:

  • Do not give honey to infants under a year because it can contain C.botullinum spores which may be harmful to the undeveloped immune systems of babies.
  • The Allicin found in garlic is a potent compound that has natural antibiotic properties as well as germ killing powers.
  • Healing with Honey is an ancient practice and has been used as such because of its anti-microbial properties and its natural antibiotic capabilities.
  • Vinegar is known as a pain reliever and is mentioned in the bible for its soothing and healing properties. In World War I vinegar was used extensively for the treatment of battle wounds

Some "stuff" that is good for Sore Throats

Chamomile

Chamomile's anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and fever reducing properties all help towards healing a sore throat. Make a soothing infusion using Chomomile.

Cayenne

Gargle with cayenne mixed with some water and honey. Pain is lessened by the capsaicin contained in cayenne and works by reducing a substance that transmits pain signals to the brain.

Echinacea

Is well known for healing sore throats and helping with tonsillitis because of its antibacterial, antiviral properties and also because it is an excellent lymphatic tonic.

Licorice

Licorice has excellent anti-inflammatory properties and has been used for centuries to ease sore inflamed throats.

Add 5 to 7 teaspoons of licorice root pieces to 3 cups of water and bring to the boil. Simmer until half the water has boiled away.

Warning: Licorice can aggravate high blood pressure.

Marshmellow Root

This herb has demulcent properties (see herbal dictionary) which means that it is an agent that forms a soothing film over a mucus membrane relieving minor pain and irritation.

Pomegranate

Often thought to be the "apple" from the Garden of Eden, has a long ancient reputation for healing sore throats. It is known as a broad-spectrum antiseptic and contains immune boosting compounds.

Try sipping the juice throughout the day.

And some "stuff" that is not so good for sore throats.

  • There is a belief that recurrent attacks of tonsillitis may be caused by an allergic reaction to cow's milk, in which case dairy products should be eliminated.
  • It is important to keep well hydrated when suffering from a sore throat, but avoid caffeinated drinks that dehydrate you.
  • Keep away from any foods that trigger acid reflux, because this causes stomach acid to back up into the throat which will irritate and worsen an already sore throat.
