While both the genders experience the problem of UTI, women are likely to experience it more often than men. UTI occurs, when the bladder and urethra are infected from bacteria. Various other reasons, such as holding the urine for a longer period of time, having a catheter, menopause or not urinating after sexual intercourse, can result in this problem.
UTI is accompanied with symptoms like, frequent urge to urinate, burning sensation while urinating, and passing small quantities of urine. Other symptoms may include- abdominal pain, change in the urine color, fever, nausea and vomiting. UTI can very easily harm the kidneys in a bad way. So, before this trouble becomes a nuisance, it is necessary for you to take an action against it. To help you out, here are some easy to try home remedies to cure UTI.

HOME REMEDIES TO TREAT URINARY TRACT INFECTION

1. Water

Water cures almost every health-related issue and keeps your body fit and fine. Many doctors suggest plenty of water intake when suffering from UTI, as it will flush out the bacteria while urinating.

2. Indian Gooseberry

Mix one tbsp of Indian gooseberry powder and one tbsp of turmeric powder in a glass of water. Allow the mixture to boil until water reduces to half. Let the mixture cool down and settle. Have it 3 times a day for 3-5 days. It will ease the problem and prevent the infections from occurring in the future.

3. Heating Pad

Urinary tract infection is commonly accompanied with pain, irritation and burning sensation around the pubic area. Applying a heating pad to the affected area will give you relief.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

ACV, being comprised of enzymes, potassium and other useful minerals, acts as an excellent urinary tract infection home remedy. To attain its benefit, drink a solution made of 2 teaspoons of ACV, a glass of water, a small quantity – each of lemon juice and honey.

5. Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice is one of the best treatments for the urinary tract infection, as it prevents the bacteria from reaching the wall of urethra. All you have to do is drink about 3-4 glasses of cranberry juice daily. You can mix some apple juice with it to enhance the taste.

Note- Do not drink the cranberry juice if you have a history of kidney stones.

6. Baking Soda

Baking soda brings the acid-base concentration of the urine to a neutral level. Mix about one teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink it regularly.

Note – Consult your doctor before using this remedy.

7. Blueberries

These berries, apart from being tasty, can work wonder in the treatment of UTI. Blueberries stop the bacterial growth and even improve your immune system. Include a lot of these berries in your diet, be it in breakfast with cereals or as juice with any meal.

8. Pineapple

Pineapple is known for its anti-inflammatory properties which help reduce the symptoms of UTI, considerably. Just include a bowl full of pineapple or its juice in your diet and you will notice wonderful changes.

9. Frequent Urination

If you hold your pee for a longer duration, you are giving an open invitation to the bacteria to live and reside in your body. Urinating every time you feel like is a process of recovering soon as it will eliminate all the bacteria.

10. Celery Seeds

Chewing celery seeds is another outstanding remedy for treating UTI at home. Celery seeds not only improve your digestion but also increase the number of times you urinate. To attain the desired results, gulp down a handful of celery seeds right after having a meal, on a regular basis.

Alternatively, make a celery seed solution. Boil 2 cups of water and add a cup of celery seeds to it. After bringing it to room temperature, strain it and drink.

11. Cucumbers

This cool veggie can make your life easier by reducing the number of bacteria responsible for UTI. Cucumber has got diuretic properties and a very high content of water which can directly increase the number of times you go to pee. All you have to do is grab a fresh cucumber from your refrigerator, slice it, and eat.

12. Tartar and Lemon Cream

One of the oldest and effective natural remedies to treat UTI at home is to use tartar and lemon cream. This cream will regulate the pH of your urine and make the survival of the bacteria difficult. Take about 1-1½ teaspoons of tartar cream in a cup of water and stir properly. Add a few drops of lemon juice to it and drink it regularly.

13. Garlic

Garlic is one of the best remedies to treat urinary tract infection at home with ease. Garlic contains an ingredient named allicin which possesses antifungal and antibacterial properties. It kills E. coli bacteria responsible for this infection. Eat about 3-4 cloves everyday to treat UTI completely.

14. Ginger

Ginger is a strong antioxidant, antibacterial and an anti-inflammatory agent that treats the urinary tract infection from roots. All you have to do is prepare ginger tea by adding some amount of ginger in a glass of water and boil it for about 10-12 times. Then strain it and drink. Consume it daily.

Note – Do not drink ginger tea for more than 3 times a day.

15. Cod Liver Oil

Rich in vitamin D and A, cod liver oil makes a perfect remedy for UTI. Both vitamin A and D work on the micro bacteria in the bladder and provide quick relief.

16. Probiotics

Probiotics help prevent repetitive occurrence of UTI in women. So, include kefir, kombucha, and yogurt in your diet. These foods eliminate the infection-causing bacteria from the body.

HERBAL REMEDIES FOR URINARY TRACT INFECTION

17. Parsley

The diuretic properties of parsley make it one of the excellent home remedies for UTI. It eliminates out more sodium while urinating. Take about 2 cups of water and bring it to boil. Add about one cup of fresh parsley to it. Keep it on simmer for about 5-6 minutes. You can drink it hot. If you want to drink it as an iced tea, keep it in the refrigerator for some time. Consume it on the daily basis.

18. Horseradish

Horseradish is a member of the cabbage family. This herb is bactericidal in nature, hence, its consumption will help in the speedy recovery. Grate about ½ teaspoon of it and consume it on the daily basis.

Note – If it is too spicy for you to consume, mix it with some water or milk.

19. Uva Ursi

Uva ursi is one of the best natural remedies for UTI, as it not only removes the infection, but also reduces the irritation on the affected area. All you have to do is ingest uva ursi on the daily basis.

Note: Pregnant or nursing women, children, and people with liver and kidney disorders should not consume uva ursi.

20. Tea Tree Oil

Rich with antibacterial properties, tea tree oil keeps all kinds of bladder infections at bay, including UTI. Mix about 10 drops of tea tree oil in your bathing water and soak in it for about half an hour.

Alternatively, for better treatment, you can add two tablespoons of yogurt and 6 drops of tea tree oil in warm bathing water and soak in it.

21. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile herb is known to treat UTI naturally. It apart from relaxing the nervous system also provides a soothing effect to the bladder lining. To prepare tea, take 2 parts each of chamomile and cranberry, 1 part of Echinacea, 1 part of Uva Ursi and juice of one lemon in a container. Pour hot water in it. After letting it cool for 8-10 minutes, strain it and drink. Consume it regularly until UTI is cured completely.

22. Marshmallow Root Tea

Marshmallow root tea can soothe the lining of the urinary tract, inhibit the growth of bacteria and detox the bladder. Take about 1-2 tablespoons of marshmallow root and tie it in a cloth. Keep it in a mug and pour some hot water in it. After cooling it for 10 minutes, remove the cloth bag and drink the tea.

23. Ginger and Peppermint Tea

The burning sensation that you experience while having UTI can easily be prevented with the help of tea prepared from ginger, peppermint and juniper berry. Add 2 tablespoons of grated ginger, 1/3 cup fresh mint leaves, and 2 teaspoons of dried juniper berries in about 4 cups of water and let the solution boil for about 7-8 minutes. After straining the tea, drink it. Consume 3 cups a day.

24. Dandelion and Horsetail Tea

Horsetail and dandelion tea is an excellent remedy to treat UTI as it contains tannin, which helps tighten the tissues and removes toxins from the body. To prepare the tea, mix 1 teaspoon each of dried horsetail and dandelion in a mug of hot water. Allow it to rest for about 10 minutes before drinking. Repeat the process twice a day.

25. Sage

Sage is another excellent herb which cures UTI easily. You can consume it regularly in the form of tea and will see the difference in short span of time due to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-microbial and astringent properties.

Note- It is not advised to consume sage for a longer period of time, unless you are prescribed by a physician.

26. Goldenseal

Goldenseal herb is packed with anti-bacterial properties, and hence, can be used to counter the symptoms of UTI. You can consume goldenseal in the form of tablet, capsule, liquid extract or tincture.

Note- Consumption of goldenseal can give rise to the problem of photosensitivity where the body becomes sensitive to the exposure to the sun. So, consult a doctor before taking it.

DO’S

  • Maintain proper hygiene and cleanliness. Always clean from front to back after urinating.
  • Wipe the genital and anal area after doing sex.
  • Wear undergarments made from cotton.
  • Take enough sleep, i.e., at least 8 hours a day.
  • To prevent chemical reactions, use unbleached and unscented toilet paper.

DON’TS

  • Do not indulge in any sexual activity if you are suffering from UTI, as it will slow down the recovery process.
  • Avoid using bath tubs. Instead, take showers.
  • Do not consume citrus fruits, caffeinated and carbonated drinks.
  • Do not smoke or consume alcohol, as it may lead to dehydration of the body.
